Tensegrity Structures - Day 2: Tension + Integrity = Tensegrity?

Today was the second day of Tensegrity Structures.  It's a good thing we scheduled two days because the first day was a disaster!  We were following this guide and did not read the part about the straws being the same length as the rubberbands!  So our first attempt our straws were too long and our second attempt, our straws were too short.  This time, like Goldilocks and the 3 bears, they are going to be just right!

Tuesday, November 13, 2018

Tensegrity Structures - Day 1 - InTense!

Tensegrity Structures!  Simple and complicated!  Today we we created our own tensegrity structures using the same principles as large scale sculptures and architecture.

Soldering: Day 3 - Hot Vibes

We are entering into the homestretch for this soldering project.  Just one more day to go after today.

The students are getting close to being finished and hopefully we will continue our streak of no one getting burned!  No hot vibes today!

TinkerCAD @ Elm Middle

Today we had a special edition TinkerCAD class at Elm Middle School with Mrs. Korteling's Art Club!

We learned the basics of 3D printing and learned how 3D printers do what they do!  We started a quick design, but I'll be heading back there next week to pick up where we left off!

Thursday, October 18, 2018

Soldering: Day 2 - The Heat Is On

We've learned our basic soldering concepts and safety now it's time to get busy!  Following the instructions, we add the components to the pcb (printed circuit board), solder them in place and snip off the excess leads.

We'll be done in no time!

TinkerCAD @ Trinity High School

Today, Ahren visited Trinity High School's Mrs. Siliunas' Sculpture class where students were creating 3D logos for fictional companies they had envisioned.

The challenge was to bring the design they had drawn on paper to life using the 3D tools in TinkerCAD.  It sounds a lot easier said than done, but the students figured it out in a short amount of time and created designs that looked strikingly similar to their drawings.

After that, the students exported their designs as .stl files to be printed on the school's Makerbot Replicator!

Tuesday, October 16, 2018

Soldering - Day 1: Hot Hot Hot!

Today was the first day of learning to solder electronic circuitry.  Since it was our first day and we have a group of students who have never soldered before it was very important to have a good old fashioned safety briefing.  Basically, the soldering iron is HOT and it will BURN you if you are CARELESS.  So be CAREFUL!  Our goal is to make it through all 4 classes this time around without a single burn!

We are going to be making little electronic pianos that can play "Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do".  We'll start with a plastic bag of parts and hopefully in the end have a working electronic device!

Thursday, October 11, 2018

Vinyl Cutter - Day 2: Silhouewhaa?

Today was the last day of our Vinyl Cutting class!  We spent most of last class on the computer taking our profile portrait and turning it into a proper black silhouette.  Now we will run the image through the vinyl cutter, separate the vinyl material and apply it to our picture frames!

Tuesday, October 9, 2018

Vinyl Cutter - Day 1: Silhouette's are hard

Today we started creating what is going to be a very cool silhouette of our faces!  We began by taking a profile picture of ourselves and then using Adobe Photoshop to turn it into a proper silhouette!

Photoshop Poster Design

We are back in the PNG room today! Unfortunately, the files we started on Thursday can't be opened in Photoshop so we went back to the Photoshop files from the first class and got to work
! We wrapped up our designs and got them formatted to print out on our poster printer.

Now, we have some cool designs to show off! Check them out!

Thursday, July 26, 2018

Photoshop Poster Design

Things were not ideal today. We had to make to with another photoediting software called Pixlr. Essentially, it's a web-based photoshop! It had familiar tools like the lasso and layer tool!

Some of us started brand new posters, others continued with our original designs. All of us, however, were frustrated!

On Tuesday, we will be back to normal and wrap up!

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

Photoshop Poster Design

Today was the first day of our Photoshop Poster Design class. We brainstormed hard about creating a cool poster and how to make it a reality. We also learned the very basics of Adobe Photoshop Elements!

Hour of Code

Who doesn't love a good coding session? In this laid-back class, everyone went through self-guided lessons and taught themselves the ins and outs of basic block coding using websites like Code.org or Tynker.com.

We all definitely have the hang of this coding thing down so next time, we can move on to something bigger and better!

Thursday, June 28, 2018

Live Action Comic Book - Day 2

We're wrapping up today by scanning whatever pictures we had finished and opening them up in Photoshop! From there, we used the paintbucket tool to bring our pictures to life. Everyone got a little experience with Photoshop, even if we didn't all finish our comic strips...

Tuesday, June 26, 2018

Live Action Comic Book - Day 1

It's comic time! In this class, students will brainstorm comic strip ideas and act them out. Once pictures of every scene are taken, we will print, trace, and upload them to Photoshop to be edited!

Today, we finished taking pictures. Next class, we will trace and color them in using Photoshop!

We're past the halfway point! we kept at our designs today and even started some new ones. Slowly but surely, we are getting more and more comfortable with our CAD software!

Negative Space Art - Day 1 (teens)

It's officially the last week of PNG spring! We're finishing it off with some awesome vinyl art. This is a two-part class so today we used Silhouette Studios to get our design ready for cutting!

Thursday we'll cut our sticker out and out it on a canvas.

Thursday, May 24, 2018

TinkerCAD - Day 2 (MidKids)

We continued our work today, attacking our designs with precision. Some of us are making castles, some are making houses. Nevertheless, they're going to look awesome!

Robot Club (teens)

We are nearing an end for the spring session, and what better way to end it that with a dual Robot Club/ Soldering class?! Our previous soldering class didn't quite finish on Tuesday so we figured that we could spill into today's Robot Club class.

Our Soldering class is almost done. One more class should do it for us!

We got crazy with Robot Club though... We started a new robot inspired by a YouTube video we saw! We have the base done and in two weeks, we'll add wheels!

Tuesday, May 22, 2018

TinkerCAD - Day 1 (Midkids)

Another season, another TinkerCAD class... We had some newcomers this time around so we taught them the basics and they were off! This is a four-parter so today we just got our chops warmed up and did some brainstorming.

Soldering - Day 5 (teens)

We're so close!!! We're on the home stretch and are about to finish. Unfortunately, we ran out of time today so we're going to see when we can get back together to finish this once and for all! (hopefully..)

This was definitely the most ambitious soldering project yet!

Thursday, May 17, 2018

Soldering - Day 4 (teens)

More of the same today. We are just about done with the AM radio. We're onto the FM radio next week! We got to try out our new circuit board clamps, too! Slow and steady wins the race...

Tuesday, May 15, 2018

Soldering - Day 3 (teens)

We continued to attack the kits today. They are turning out to be a lot more expansive that we though. We are about a third of the way done so hopefully we pick up the pace!

Thursday, May 10, 2018

Soldering - Day 2 (teens)

We kept attacking our circuit boards today. We hit a couple bumps, but they were no big deal. We have quite a ways to go so we will continue all of next week!

Tuesday, May 8, 2018

Soldering- Day 1 (Teens)

Soldering is back! We took it up a notch from last time, when we made an FM radio. This time around, we're making and AM/FM radio that is about four times as large! While daunting, we attacked the kits and made some good progress today! We'll continue on Thursday...

Thursday, May 3, 2018

Bristlebots Obstacle Course (Midkids)

Everyone loves Hexbugs, so why not make your own! Today, we used a toothbrush and a motor to make moving DIY Hexbugs. From there, we reused old paper towel rolls to make pipes for the bots to travel through! Or at least, we tried to....

Thursday, April 12, 2018

Ozobot Obstacle Course Challenge - Day 2 (Midkids)

Some obstacle courses were conquered!... some weren't... but that's ok because we all learned a little bit about how to block code! Using the Ozoblockly software, we familiarized ourselves with basic commands for our robot to follow and had fun while doing it!

Tuesday, April 10, 2018

Ozobot Obstacle Course Challenge - Day 1 (Midkids)

Ozobots are awesome and the amount of things you can do with them are limitless. This session is all about problem solving. We are going to design our own obstacle courses using posters and coding our Ozobots to complete them! Everyone will learn soon that it is not as easy as it sounds....

Thursday, April 5, 2018

Hour of Code (MidKids)

Nothing beats a good old fashioned Hour of Code session. We had a lonely one today but that didn't stop us from tinkering with some code! We'll continue with coding next month so stay tuned...

Robot Club

It was back to the drawing board today... We tried to fix our robot, who seemingly forgot how to be a robot. After figuring out how to re-download the default code on the robot and joystick, we're back on track! We'll keep exploring the robot and ROBOTC in two weeks!

Thursday, March 29, 2018

LED Origami Frogs - Day 2 (MidKids)

We wrapped up our LED frogs today after struggling a bit with our batteries. The positioning got a bit finicky at times, but we tinkered with our frogs and got them to light up! Some of us didn't get it to stay on, unfortunately. We all learned about currents, LEDs, and oragami though...and we have cool flipping frogs to prove it!

LED Origami Frogs - Day 2 (teens)

Our frogs came to life today! After much experimenting, we figured out the best place to put our LED leads and batteries. Now, we get to take home our LED frogs to show off to everyone

Robot Club

Second one of the month today and we picked up right where we left off. We got the jist of everything again and re familiarized ourselves with ROBOTIC, the program we use to code our robot. We set up some challenges for our robot to accomplish. We may have not achieved them all, but we were close. We have have taken a small step backwards however, as when configuring the joystick, we lost the connection between the joystick and robot!

Thursday, March 15, 2018

TinkerCAD - Day 4

It was time to wrap up today! Most people already had a design complete or nearly complete so today was all about adding the fine details. We began the long printing process and everyone should hopefully have their designs by next week!

Stop Motion Animation - Day 4

Today was our last day and we got to play around with Adobe Premiere a little more. We learned how to insert background music and played with the effects. We managed to finish a decent video and learned a lot while doing it!

Wednesday, March 14, 2018

Trinity HS - TinkerCAD Special Edition

We had a special 2 and a half hour class today exclusively made up of students from Trinity High School!

Students were tasked with creating a 3D model of a logo of their own design.  Most of the students hadn't used TinkerCAD much before arriving and it was awesome to watch them pick it up and become instant pros!

We had a lot of fun, and learned a lot too.  Can't wait to print out all of the logos and do it again!
